Principles of Website Design that Sell

Your website is extremely important to your business.  Many times it is your first impression to customers, donors or business partners.  A design that sucks will result in a loss of credibility, evaporating any level of trust that may have existed.

"As aesthetically oriented humans, we're psychologically hardwired to trust beautiful people, and that goes for websites." - Dr. Coker, University of Melbourne
  1. Aesthetics are means to an end
Keeping things simple and clean is essential to any website design.  When we talk about a website being beautiful we are saying that it is not only visually appealing but the navigation is intuitive and rewarding for users.
  2. Each page must have a goal
This is pretty obvious.  If you have a website page doesn't accomplish a specific goal - get rid of it, it's just clutter.
  3. Make your 'call to action' stand out
Use color and size to your advantage (although sparingly).  Desired actions should be easy to initiate by the user.
  4. Keep it simple
No need to say much on this topic.  Avoid the clutter and focus on key elements and the user's experience.
  5. Don't reinvent the wheel
There have been many website designers before us who have learned through their erroneous ways.  Learn what they have learned and steal whenever permissible.
  6. Typography is vital
The type you chose is essential to creating an aesthetically pleasing site.  Stick to clean, easy to read fonts.
  7. Make it responsive
So many devices, so many ways of accessing your site.  Websites today need to be 'responsive' to the behaviors of its users, they need to adapt to the environment in which users are accessing your site (cellphone, tablet, fable, etc).

Make sure the your website design follows these simple principles and you'll be more than pleased with the results.
